Boston National Historic Park - Boston(Charlestown) Navy Yard

 

The 130-acre navy yard contains the 86 buildings, 416 miles of railroad, and numerous docks and piers.

The Charlestown Navy Yard

(Boston National Historical Park)consists of approximately 27 acres of this land, 20 of the buildings, one of the dry docks, three piers, and an assemblage of artifacts, including a large collection of navy documents relating to the history of the yard

Pic 2Hoppers/Safety Shoes: Big(bldg259) and small(bldg273) Grit(sand) hopper built in 1953 and 1963 where used for both sand blasting ships and for the icy roads and piers... The safety shoe sign was one of many around the navy yard during the 50, 60 and 70's.  The sign on the big hopper was relocated from bldg 36 in the late 70's by the NPS...
