Portal
Cranes:
The Charlestown Navy Yard today has 3
portal (gantry) cranes. The 3 cranes date back to there
installation in the park in 1943...
Hoppers/Safety Shoes:
Big(bldg259) and small(bldg273) Grit(sand) hopper built
in 1953 and 1963 where used for both sand blasting ships and
for the icy roads and piers... The safety shoe sign was
one of many around the navy yard during the 50, 60 and 70's.
The sign on the big hopper was relocated from bldg 36 in the
late 70's by the NPS...
Marine
Railway:
The Charlestown Navy Yard had a
marine railway for working on smaller ships and auxiliary

Ropewalk:
The Charlestown Navy Yard Ropewalk is
a 1/4 mile long building hosing boilers, railroad tracks and
all the machinery for making rope. All the rope or
line as its known in the navy was made for the US Navy in
the Charlestown Navy Yard Ropewalk between 1830 thru
1950's...
