Chain Locker Priming 2010 : With the replacement of both port and starboard hull sections in the chain locker the bulkheads needed to be primed and prepared for the chain to be returned.  Also the sump pit needed to be drained, chipped and primed.  This whole operations was made more difficult by the fact that its 3 decks down and the hatch to the compartment is very small... Both NPS maintenance staff and a number of Volunteers participated in this project...

Ship Dry-Docking 2010 : The USS Cassin Young's ultimate restoration project.  August 2010 the Cassin Young was dry-docked in the Charlestown Navy yards dry-dock #1.  30 years since her last dry-docking means a lot of hull work needs to be done.  This work will be done over the course of about 4 months.  When repairs are finished she will return to her usual berth on Pier 1 opposite her famous Neighbor, USS Constitution.

Pic 2Exhaust Ran Repair 2008-2009: The Exhaust fan for aft berthing needed to be repaired or replaced. The Tuesday guys examined the fan and ruled out a number of  problems and determined the fan needed to be removed for closer inspection.  They began the arduous task of removing the bolts from the housing to help remove the fan.  Then the Saturday guys finished removing the attached piece of duct work from the overhead and then completed the removal of the fan and placed it on sleepers on the dock for transporting to a motor shop where the fan was rewound, tested and balanced.

With a great deal off effort and manpower the repaired fan is back in place and the ductwork is reattached and she is running again...

Helm Repair September 2008: The USS Cassin Young's Helm (ships wheel) has been being turned by visitors since she opened to the public in 1981.  Because of this the helm has worn down the shaft it turns on causing it to wobble.  The helm was removed and taken apart. The helm needed to be rebored but the Cassin Young's machine shop can't turn the 24" diameter that the helm is.  An outside machine shop was use to rebore the helm.  Then all the remaining machining was done in the Cassin Young's machine shop by our ace volunteer machinist, Bill M.

Amidships Lighting Replacement: Lighting in the amidships passage, outside the sickbay and emergency radio, had been out for a couple weeks. on Saturday July 12 2008 our crack(or is it cracked up) team of volunteer electricians and helpers ran new power cables to and within the compartments and rewired the lights and switches.  After many hours in the dark(although were not sure they noticed it) the guys got the lights working again and now our visitors can see where there going when they tour these areas.  Below are some photos of the work being done, luckily these guys are use to going thru life in the dark so working in the compartments was not a big problem...LOL
